FRIDAY FACTS

BCA’s Weekly Newsletter

February 26, 2010

We believe that true education develops the spiritual, mental, and physical powers of each student; preparing them for the joy of service in this life and for the higher joy of service in the life to come. To achieve this goal, we encourage each student to: (a) develop a personal relationship with God and his fellow men as stated in Matthew 2:37-39; (b) master the basic academic skills; (c) value labor, physical and mental (d) cultivate physical fitness, mental ability, and moral purity as the blessing God intended. Excerpt from BCA Mission Statement.

Dear friend:

Battle Creek Academy continues to maintain a strong music program. Last issue of the Friday Facts we considered the life skills that are gained through a study and practice of the musical arts. Our music teacher furthers this insight:

“Academically speaking, there seems to be an advantage for the student who has learned to master making music.  It is amazing to read the studies of the correlation of student learning processes and music with the brain in mind.   In scientific studies it has been said that “Music stands head and shoulders about other disciplines in its likely impact on overall learning.” (Music with the Brain in Mind by Eric Jensen , Corwin Press (2000)).

Music is a very personal thing. As a community we understand its importance in praise and worship and thankfully God created us as emotional beings that can express ourselves in our music.  The continuing goal of our bands is to create music worthy of praise to God and to use the talents He has given us. “Music making forces us to create, reflect, bare our souls, ponder, and react in new ways.” (True Education by Ellen G. White).”

Join us for vespers and music at the Tabernacle SDA Church this Sabbath (27th February) at 5pm. For those with a sweet tooth, that night an ice-cream social will be held in the gym.

But more than music happens at BCA. Here is a snapshot of the other areas of ministry we do here:

IMPORTANT: Please turn in the Mission Emphasis Week Application Forms ASAP. We need them for review by Wednesday, March 3.

Mission Emphasis Week: Please return the mission service forms by MONDAY, 1st MARCH.

Week of Prayer: The high school students are not only conducting their own chapel sessions all week, but they were also doing this for the elementary school students! A variety of song, stories, drama, and the spoken word was used to draw our minds to Jesus. The theme of our week of prayer was "You Decide." The focus was on making right choices and the choice for Jesus, regardless of your age level.

Grade K-1: The elementary school’s theme for the year continues to be, “Build An Ark.”  An important sub-theme for our class has been that we do our best for Jesus.  Noah did his best and that gives us purpose for our goals.  We are also working at being servant leaders and helping others.  Our weekly song-over-the-phone “Sweet Jesus” to shut-ins has not gotten old.  In addition, we all have personal goals that we are working towards, and meeting those goals means receiving simple rewards like coins to spend in the classroom store.  As I re-evaluate our classroom goals and the goals I have for each student, I ask myself again: are we still building that ark? That is, are we building a relationship with Jesus?  By the grace of God, that’s our goal at BCA.

Our Need: The Fourth and Fifth Grade class is in need of a DVD player.  If you are willing to donate one or have an extra one you don’t need please contact Charlene Lavallee. Thank you!

Free to Good Homes: Battle Creek Academy has three upright pianos that are in need of new homes by March 31. If you are interested in providing a home for a piano, please call the school office at 965-1278.

Preparation for School Evaluation

·         Constituents Work Bee Day (Sunday, March 28): Our school evaluation by the North American Division will soon be here (April 11-14). We invite you to help us to make BCA shine! From 9 am – 12 pm, let’s work together to give BCA that extra sparkle.

·         Student Helper Bee Day (Thursday, April 8): Our students are always eager to help and we want to give them that opportunity. For part of the latter part of the school day students will be supervised to help give BCA that extra sparkle.

Career Guidance Counseling for Your High School Student

Battle Creek Academy's mission to support the growth of your student as he or she develops a Seventh-day Adventist Christian work ethic is seen in the focus on helping them develop an awareness of career opportunities in our changing world and in our church.  Late last semester, our guidance director Miss Nelsen provided your high school student with the opportunity to use careercruising.com which is an online career exploration and planning tool.  This website provides your child with tools to explore career and post-secondary education options and develop a career plan.  Career cruising can be accessed from school, home, or wherever your student has access to the internet.  Your child has already completed career interest and skills assessments that can help your child identify suitable career options based on his or her interests and skills.

Over the course of the next month, your child will have an opportunity to watch multimedia interviews from individuals currently in the occupations of your child's choice.  In addition, your child will be able to read through career profiles that will describe what an individual in this career does on a day to day basis, what education is required for the job, what amount of money can be made in this career based on state of residence, and a sample career path.  Miss Nelsen wants to encourage you to look over the careercruising.com website with your child to continue to identify his or her interests, abilities and values, understanding their relationship to career options.  Let's help our students see where God is working in their lives so they can join HIM in service for our world and the church.

The 8th Grade Class Play

The 8th grade class is making final preparations for a play presentation on Thursday, March 4 at 2:15.  After reading about Harriet Tubman and writing about the qualities necessary to be a pioneer, the class began preparations to turn the radio script, "Conductor of the Underground Railroad" into a short stage play.  The students have been busy rehearsing lines, practicing voice pitch and modulation, enunciation, and character portrayal, not to mention designing the scenery and deciding on costumes.  Though a bit nervous, they are looking forward to the curtains parting!

From Our Librarian

The library now receives Liberty, Vibrant Life, and Message magazines.  We would like to add more periodicals to both the elementary and high school libraries.  Some exciting plans are in the works.  Please contact Mrs. Martes at 269-265-1278 ext. 1017 or email to amartes@battlecreekacademy.com. Your support and encouragement is so very much appreciated!

In helping to build a professional library for staff, Mr. Agard has graciously been sharing his copies of Education Week newspaper.  Teachers will find the latest (as well as back copies from January) in the teacher's lounge.  Thank you, Mr. Agard!

We are working on building a picture file for projects in both the elementary and secondary libraries.  If you have old calendars with pictures, old magazines that can be cut up, old holiday or greeting cards, we would be pleased to have them for this project.  Thank you!

Ski Trip

Some of the 8th Graders and high school students thoroughly enjoyed themselves at a ski trip last Wednesday. We continue to encourage such life-long recreational activities.

Vegelinks and Big Franks

We are now enjoying hot dogs (vegelinks or big franks) and chips on Mondays and Fridays, supporting the 8th grade class.  Ice cream with a variety of toppings is also available.
