Friday Facts 2008-02-22 FRIDAY FACTS
BCA’s Weekly Newsletter
February 22, 2008
Dear Friends,
My compliments for the great turn out for parent/teacher conferences last evening. I trust the time was well spent and gave you the information needed to make any last quarter adjustments in your child’s educational progress. As a staff we also want to express our appreciation for the support of the Home and School who provides the teachers with meals during the long day.
I am appreciative to all those who attended the “Great Read In” in the 3rd and 4th grade room last week. We had a strong turn out which is a wonderful way to model the importance of reading to our children. I was a bit embarrassed by Mr. Andersen for sleeping through various stages of the afternoon but I’m sure being married to a career committed wife has exhausted him.
Miss Nelsen is conducting an online survey as part of the culmination of her guidance counseling internship and would like some feedback from parents about what they feel is working well in the guidance department and what needs can be better met. All parents K-12 are invited to fill out an online needs survey to voice opinions about what areas of spiritual, academic, personal/social, and career guidance activities should be a part of your child’s education. Miss Nelsen will be emailing you a link to the survey.
We reviewed the final plans for the various mission trips this year and I am excited to report that over 50% of the high school students will be involved in one of the trips this spring. It is a testament to the school board who wrestled with the issue and made changes a few years ago. It seems that the outreach is better planned, more effective and well connected with the area churches when they return.
Another piece of good news is high school attendance, again over 50% of secondary students achieved perfect attendance last semester! It has been interesting to watch this area improve as the faculty have moved from a policy which punished poor compliance to one which rewards successful behavior.
Several area schools have had to close due to influenza outbreaks so we feel fortunate to have avoided it so far. Please make sure your children are getting balanced meals, lots of rest and water to stay healthy. We have been focusing on nutrition this week so don’t be surprised if your children are looking at food labels when you are eating meals.
In case you missed it last week the Michigan Conference Office of Education has extended the number of allowable snow days to 8. So unlike other area school districts we are in great shape for the remainder of the school year if we need to close due to weather conditions.
I will not be providing a Friday Facts next week due to travel. The Lake Union has an important alumni meeting in Orlando, Florida which provides an opportunity for BCA alumni to meet and get up to speed on school happenings so I was selected as the sacrificial lamb to toil in warm weather for a couple of days!
Have a wonderful Sabbath and hopefully I’ll see you on one of our area walking trails.
