FRIDAY FACTS
January 30, 2009

As I reflect back on January and how quickly it has passed, my mind is drawn to the election of our 44th president. We are blessed to live in a country full of freedoms. I am especially reminded of how blessed we are to have a school where students can come to learn about God.

On Tuesday, January 20 students and faculty gathered in three different rooms to watch the inauguration of our new president. For many students this was the first time they had witnessed such an event. Many classrooms had been preparing for this event since the beginning of the school year. Students have studied the different offices, how elections take place, and the responsibilities of being a citizen.

January 28 was the 100th day of school. Kindergarteners through Second graders celebrated by exploring what 100 means. Mrs. Mattson’s students weighed objects of 100, strung 100 pieces of cereal on a string and hung it outside for the birds, and they also hunted for the 100th student in our building. Mrs. Essex’s students brought in 100 items from home. They also wrote about items they could eat 100 of in one meal such as rice and popcorn. A fun time was had by all.

You are invited to attend the National Honor Society Inductions taking place this evening at 7:00 PM in the BCA Chapel. Students are selected based on their scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The evening’s speaker will be Mrs. Velez.

Mr. Knowles’ health message for this week:
“What can soda do to you? Many people enjoy an occasional soda, as do I. In moderation this will not affect you that much. Those that drink soda on a regular basis often don’t realize what they are doing to their body. On average a 20 oz bottle of soda contains approximately 1/3 cup of sugar. One can of soda a day equals 160 calories x 365=58,400 calories a year. If you divide this number by 3500 (the number of calories in a pound of fat) you get 16.7 pounds of fat. That is 16.7 pounds of fat that you must burn in a year just because of drinking soda. Also, sugar lowers the immune system by killing white blood cells. Drinking a 20 oz bottle of soda can lower your immune system for 5 hours or more. For this reason it is very important to stay away from sugar when you are sick. Your immune system is trying to fix the problem, and by taking in sugar you are killing the very thing that is working to make you better. We all should take a look at our diet to see what we are doing for our immune system.”
