Friday Facts
March 6, 2009

This week was our Spring Week of Prayer. Our speaker, Ms. Karen Toms, is the Outreach Chaplain at Andrews University where she leads the ministry to the poor in Benton Harbor, and a soup kitchen program in the city of Chicago.  Her theme for the week was “Keys to Living on the Edge.” She has pointed to one essential key every day with an illustration, followed by a Scriptural application. Her “keys” have reminded both students and faculty that effective Christianity involves the following: being spiritual, being loving, being contagious, being courageous, and being a disciple. We have all been blessed by her messages.

The Michigan Merit Exam will be offered to Juniors and Seniors on March 10-12. At a time when college tuition in this state has increased approximately 40% since 2004, it is important that our students take advantage of the financial opportunities that are available as a result of their test scores and other factors. Make sure your Junior and Senior students get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast, so that their minds are sharp for this exam. On the back of this page you will find additional information on the school’s schedule during those three days. Please keep in mind that we will not be serving hot lunches on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week due to testing.

The Freshmen and Sophomores will be going on morning field trips during the three days of testing since testing regulations do not allow us to have other students in the high school wing. The students will go bowling on Tuesday, to the Michigan Museum of History in Lansing on Wednesday, and to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo on Thursday. On Tuesday—after bowling—they will be going to Ci Cis Pizza and will need about $8.00 to pay for lunch or they may just bring a bagged lunch and eat in the bus instead. On Wednesday and Thursday they will need to bring a bagged lunch. They will be returning to school early every afternoon to continue with their classes.

The 8th grade is having a bread sale next week. This is a way of helping the 8th graders raise funds for graduation and their class trip. For those of us that can just smell the “fresh out of the oven” bread, call Kim VanderWaal @ 746-4465, or Mrs. Knutson at (423) 605-9164, or you may order in the office. The deadline to order is Tuesday, March 10.

The Tab mission trip plans are on schedule. They have raised most of their money and have completed all of the needed paperwork to embark on the project. Many thanks to all of you who contributed.

In case you missed last weekend’s activities, I am happy to report that students involved in the Tab’s Vespers program last Sabbath did a terrific job. Many thanks are in order to Ms. Stark and Mrs. Steely for their efforts in putting the program together.

A message from Mr. Knowles …

Compared to our baseline score for Physical Education testing per grade last school year, there was a marked improvement in every category that was tested (i.e., push-ups, sit ups, mile run, flexibility, shuttle run, and jump rope test). It is obvious that our Physical Education program is a success as evidenced by the test results. Your support as parents is greatly appreciated.

Finally, some items to keep in your prayers: First, our continuing search for a school Principal.   It looks like we have some solid candidates, but we want the Lord to lead us to the right person. Second, our students that are attending the Band/Keyboard Festival at Andrews University. Third, BCA, as we come to the time of the year when important decisions are made regarding our school’s future.

Have a happy and joyful Sabbath,

Eric Velez
High School Principal
