Friday Facts 2009-01-16 Friday Facts
January 16, 2009
Mrs. Velez organized a successful science fair that was held on Monday. Andrews University professors (Dr. David Novack, Chemistry Department Chair; Dr. Steen, Biology Department Chair; and Drs. Kutzner and Summerscales, Prominent Physics Department Professors) helped judge, present a science show, and assisted with the final awards. Brandi Campbell and Chris Miller were judged as medallion recipients for best elementary and high school projects respectively. Congratulations to all the participants for their efforts.
The 8th grade class will be selling delicious homemade bread ($4.00 per loaf) as a class fundraiser next Thursday, January 22, immediately following school. If you would like to help support the 8th grade class, plus satisfy your own pallet, you can call Kim VanderWaal @ 746-4465, or Mrs. Knutson @ (423) 605-9164 to place your order by phone, or sign-up in the office.
Mrs. Mattson needs 200 clean, dry milk jugs for a February project. They should be washed out with hot, soapy water, rinsed out with bleach, and then dried well before bringing them to her classroom. She also would like the caps left on. Thank you ahead of time for helping with this project.
The standardized testing results are back with remarkable scores! The students scored above grade level in the ITBS test. Thank you for helping our children keep learning a priority. Elementary and secondary teachers will be sharing the individual results with parents at the next parent/teacher conferences in February. Here are the grade equivalent scores of each class…
3rd grade - National expected average 3.0 - BCA average 4.0
4th grade - National expected average 4.0 - BCA average 5.4
5th grade - National expected average 5.0 - BCA average 6.1
6th grade - National expected average 6.0 - BCA average 6.5
7th grade - National expected average 7.0 - BCA average 9.3
8th grade - National expected average 8.0 - BCA average 11.7*
9th grade - National expected average 9.0 - BCA average 11.6*
11th grade – National expected average 11.0 – BCA average 12.8
* 8th and 9th graders do not take the same test. The 9th grade test is more difficult than the 8th grade test. I hope that these numbers affirm the work that you, your children and the teachers are doing to guide our students through their academic journeys.
Those of you who have ordered Ski Club cards will receive them before our Ski Club outing on January 28th. If you have not yet ordered your card, fill out the forms (you can find them on the website) and turn in the completed forms and club card fee to the office by next Friday if you want to participate.
Next week we will not be producing a Friday Facts as we will be going with the high school students to Bible Camp. We will spend 3 days enjoying each other and Pastor Farai Nhiwatiwa, former Pastor of the Berean Church here in Battle Creek. His theme for the weekend is “The Battle Within.” We solicit your prayers that the event will galvanize the student body spiritually as they look to the second half of the school year.
Hot lunch FYI – Thursday is now soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.
Don’t forget that we will not have school on Monday January 19, as we recognize Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday.
I invite you to join me in prayer this Sabbath as we acknowledge the Lord’s blessings during first semester. Every day we see the evidence of His presence and His guidance at the school.
As always have a delightful Sabbath!
Eric Velez
High School Principal
