Physical Excellence

The body isn’t for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. 1 Corinthians 6:13 (Common English Bible)

Each student is a masterpiece of God’s creation, possessing minds capable of grasping spiritual and intellectual truths. For the optimum development of the complete student in Christ each young person is taught ...

  1. how to keep his or her body in excellent health;
  2. how to pursue a lifestyle informed by the Holy Scriptures;
  3. how to learn of the Creator by studying His creation;
  4. how to appreciate voluntary service and work as the blessing God intended.

At Battle Creek Academy we accomplish these in a variety of ways.

  • A largely non-competitive environment enables students to safely learn individual and team sports. Character development and proper social behavior remain a priority.
  • A well-equipped gym, fitness room, sprawling grounds, and the community YMCA all offer adequate space and facilities where students learn life-long recreation activities.
  • Our campus grounds, the nearby arboretum, an impressive community zoo, and Camp Au Sable—Michigan Conference’s first class camp ground—each provide opportunities for students to interact with nature, as well as for our teachers to draw spiritual object lessons from creation.
  • Health education is integrated in both Physical Education and Science instruction. This approach teaches students the (a) biblical and scientific principles and practices for healthful living; (b) skills essential to personal wellness, successful family membership, and effective community witness/service; and (c) connections between their physical, mental and emotional health.
  • The principle of temperance—the abstinence of that which is harmful and the moderate use of that which is beneficial—is weaved throughout the program.
  • Since the body is a vessel of the Holy Spirit, and the medium through which we both communicate with and offer service to God and man, students are taught how care for the body influences the quality of their relationships with God and with humanity. Lifestyle practices are shown to be relevant to faith.
